The 1st of December of 1640 was the restauration of the Republic, not the independence. Portugal it's one of the oldest countrys of World, and never in is history lost is independence...
Portugal was part of the Moorish kingdom on the Iberian pennisula until it gained its independence in 1143 A.D.
Do some other countries... all of these are the popular countries that are not interesting, try some other countries...my advice!
